Energy restricted diet

The energy restricted diet is based on the nutrition guidelines for overweight and obesity [1]. This means that this diet applies a calorie restriction of 600 kcal per day. Recipes that are going to be selected will automatically have a lower caloric value.

This diet can therefore be suitable for people who want to lose weight. This could be, for example, when you are overweight or obese. This can be calculated using the Body Mass Index (BMI). This is a measurement method that shows whether you have a healthy weight in relation to your height. This method is less suitable if you are very muscular, pregnant, or breastfeeding [2].

You can see your current BMI in your Verdify profile. A BMI between 25.0 and 29.9 kg / m2 indicates that you may be overweight. Obesity is defined by a BMI of 30.0 kg / m2 and above.

Being overweight and obese both indicate that too much excess fat is stored in the body. This exposes people to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, disorders of muscles and joints and various types of cancer [3, 4].

Multiple factors can contribute to the development of obesity. There are multiple factors that play a role in gaining weight. Nutrition and physical exercise are among the modifiable factors that contribute to weight gain. An important individual cause for developing obesity is for example an imbalance between the number of calories eaten and those burned by daily activity and sports [5]. Common non-modifiable factors can include genetics and prenatal factors, growing older, medications and certain conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), Prader-Willi syndrome, Cushing syndrome and hypothyroidism [1, 5].

Diet principles

  • The recipes in the diet option ‘Energy restricted’ from Verdify are based on the national Eat Well Guide [6];

  • The total daily energy intake is calculated according to personal needs after which a reduction of 600 Kcal is applied.

An energy restriction is the foundation of the energy restricted diet from Verdify. However, personalised recipes still also comply with the national guidelines for a healthy diet [6], which means that the recipes always contain a sufficient amount of nutrients.
